For generations of pilgrims, gawkers, architecture students, and midcentury-modern aficionados, it would be known simply as the Stahl House. Offering bathrobes, this double room includes a private bathroom with a bath, a shower and a hairdryer. A new kitchen garden had been put in south of the house at the end of the south-east avenue, and a new south drive had been made to Clearburn Lodge. The rose beds were put in c.1935, and the present layout of the shrubbery was designed by Mrs Janet Dick-Cunyngham in the 1960s. The grand house was built in 1687, designed for Sir JamesDick by the king's personal architect, Sir William Bruce. That's when theproperty garnered the name Prestonfield, a take on the original moniker,Priestfield. We generally book a room at one category up from the most basic. Prestonfield has central Edinburgh's only helipad and landing fees are complimentary to guests staying at Prestonfield. A detailed Roman Doric porte cochere is a later addition. The circular stables were built around 1816 by James Gillespie Graham for Sir Robert Dick and have been converted to a restaurant/function suite; they are listed B.
